Low EC vs High EC Coco Peat: Which Grade to Import?
EC decides whether coco peat is ready to plant or needs treatment first. Here's how to choose between washed, buffered and high EC grades.

Choosing between washed low EC coco peat, buffered coco peat and high EC coco peat is the first decision on any coco peat purchase order. Get it right and the medium goes straight into production; get it wrong and growers fight salt stress or nutrient lock-up for weeks.
What is EC in coco peat?
EC (electrical conductivity, measured in mS/cm) shows how much dissolved salt is in the coir pith. Coconut husk naturally holds sodium and potassium, especially when husk is stored near the coast. Unwashed pith commonly tests well above 1 mS/cm; washing with fresh water brings it down.
The three export grades
High EC (natural, unwashed)
Screened and dried but not washed. The lowest-cost grade, used for soil amendment, landscaping, animal bedding and by growing-media manufacturers who wash and buffer in their own plants.
Washed low EC (0.5 – 0.7 mS/cm)
Washed through several fresh-water cycles. This is the default grade for greenhouse vegetables, nurseries and most hydroponic growers. Our washed grade was tested by the Coir Board's Central Coir Research Institute at 0.64 mS/cm.
Buffered (below 0.5 mS/cm)
Washed, then treated with calcium nitrate. Buffering swaps the sodium and potassium held on coir's exchange sites for calcium, so the substrate does not absorb calcium and magnesium from the nutrient solution after planting. Choose it for strawberries, seedlings and precision hydroponics.
Which grade for which crop?
| Use | Recommended grade |
|---|---|
| Hydroponics, strawberries, seedlings | Buffered |
| Tomato, cucumber, capsicum in substrate | Washed or buffered |
| Nursery potting and retail bricks | Washed |
| Soil blends, amendment, bedding | High EC |
How to specify EC on your purchase order
Write the EC limit and the test method (for example, 1:1.5 volume extract), and ask for a batch test report with the shipping documents. Also specify pH, moisture, sand and particle size. Our standard specification is listed on the coco peat products page.
Vimsen Exim — a coco peat supplier that tests every batch
Vimsen Exim exports all three grades from Tamil Nadu, India, and shares batch EC, pH, moisture and sand values before your container is booked. If you're comparing coco peat suppliers in India, ask each one for a batch report — it's the fastest way to separate verified quality from claims.
FAQ
Is low EC coco peat the same as buffered coco peat?
No. Low EC (washed) coco peat has had salts rinsed out. Buffered coco peat is washed and then treated with calcium nitrate to stabilise the exchange sites.
What EC is acceptable for hydroponics?
Most hydroponic growers ask for EC below 0.5 mS/cm and prefer buffered coco peat.
