How to Choose a Cocopeat Supplier in India: 8 Checks Before You Pay
India is one of the largest sources of cocopeat blocks, and most of it comes from Tamil Nadu and Kerala. That also makes it a crowded market, with established exporters, new export houses and occasional fraudsters. These eight checks protect you whichever supplier you choose, including us.
1. Check the export registration
Every Indian exporter needs an Importer-Exporter Code (IEC) from the DGFT. Ask for it and check it. Coir exporters should also register with the Coir Board. A supplier who cannot show basic registrations is not ready to ship to you.
2. Ask for an independent lab report, with a report number
A spec sheet is a promise; a lab report is evidence. The Coir Board's Central Coir Research Institute (CCRI) tests coir pith to the Indian standard IS 19103. Ask for the report number and date, and check that the product named matches what you are buying.
3. Ask for EC per lot, not just a headline number
Electrical conductivity varies from lot to lot. Washed cocopeat typically sits around 0.5–0.7 mS/cm; below 0.5 needs extra washing or buffering. Be wary of a supplier who promises a very low EC for every shipment without offering a lot test.
4. Check moisture and sand
High moisture means you pay freight on water and risk mould. Sand adds weight and harms your substrate. Ask for both figures in the lot report.
5. Start with a sample from the actual lot
A showroom sample proves little. Ask for a sample from the lot that will be shipped, along with its readings.
6. Ask for a pre-shipment video
A short video of the blocks, an EC meter reading and the container being stuffed, ending on the seal number, costs the supplier little and tells you a lot.
7. See the documents before the balance payment
Ask for the draft invoice, packing list and certificate of origin, and copies of the bill of lading and phytosanitary certificate, before you release the balance.
8. Protect the payment
Payment-redirection fraud is common in commodity trade. Only pay to bank details that come from the supplier's own domain email, and confirm them on a phone call. At Vimsen Exim our details only come from info@vimsenexim.com.
How we meet these checks
We are a new export house, so we expect you to check us. Our IEC, MSME registration and CCRI test report are published, and every order follows the sample, lot report, video and documents process above.
Frequently asked questions
Most growers use washed cocopeat at about 0.5 mS/cm or lower; very salt-sensitive crops may need buffered cocopeat below 0.5. Check your crop's tolerance.
About 5,200 blocks of 5 kg (about 26 MT) when loose-loaded; fewer when palletised.
Tuticorin and Chennai are the main ports for Tamil Nadu cocopeat; Kochi is used for Kerala.
